Six months have passed since the Burmese Army seized power in a coup. Since that dark day, the people of Burma/Myanmar have continued to suffer the consequences. In the months following Feb 1, it has become abundantly clear that the terrorist junta has neither the political will nor the ability to govern with compassion and humanity. Something must be done to reverse the devastation.

Women remain at the forefront of the ongoing revolution in Burma/Myanmar where protests are continuing against the military council. But in the aftermath of the coup in February, the military has attempted to stifle the voices of pro-democracy activists where often women are on the frontlines. For decades, women have been proactively resisting patriarchal norms by challenging a system designed to suppress their voices. The male-dominated Tatmadaw exemplifies sexist behaviours and attitudes which continue to threaten the safety of women and young girls. 

It has now been over 100 days since the Burmese Army unlawfully took control over the country in a coordinated coup d’etat. The actions of the security forces at the command of the so-called State Administrative Council (SAC), have forced civilians into oppressive rule through their morally corrupt policies. Violent policing and increased disappearances of those involved in anti-coup activities has stripped the people of Burma/Myanmar of their rights, as the junta continues to rule with an iron-fist approach.

Democratic norms, values and principles are not being protected, nor upheld in Burma/Myanmar. April was a devastating month; with mounting evidence of clear crimes against humanity including sexual and gender-based violence. Those who are speaking the truth are facing fierce condemnation and force by the regime. Regardless, the people of Burma/Myanmar have continued to stand firm with their rejection of the military coup.

Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, the Women’s League of Burma (WLB) urges the general public to join our campaign against military impunity. WLB is committed to ending a nationwide pattern of sexual violence in conflict and to hold military junta accountable for sexual violence in conflict.
