Statement on the Election of the Secretariat Team for the 12th Congress Term

Statement on the Election of the Secretariat Team for the 12th Congress Term

23 July 2026

The Women's League of Burma (WLB) is pleased to announce the successful election of its Secretariat Team for the 12th Congress term (2026–2028). The election was conducted during the Second Policy Board Meeting, held from 8–11 July 2026, in accordance with the resolution adopted at the 12th WLB Congress.

The 12th Congress, held in Thailand during the third week of December 2025, concluded the mandate of the Secretariat Team that had served during the 11th Congress term. While the Congress formed a new Policy Board, comprising one representative from each of WLB's 13 member organisations, and  a five-member Advisory Board, it resolved to postpone the election of the Secretariat Team for six months. This decision was made to allow sufficient time to strengthen the WLB based on the reports, evaluations, and recommendations presented during the Congress. To ensure continuity during the interim period, the Congress appointed a five-member Acting Secretariat Team to carry out the Secretariat's administrative and management responsibilities.

Following this six-month period, the election of the Secretariat Team was held through a transparent and democratic secret-ballot process on 11 July during the Second Policy Board Meeting. The following members were elected to serve as the Secretariat Team for the 12th Congress term and officially assumed their responsibilities on 16 July 2026:

  • Maw Byar Mar Oo – General Secretary
  • Phoo Pwint Thwe – Joint General Secretary (1)
  • Kham Mai – Joint General Secretary (2)

The Women's League of Burma warmly congratulates the newly elected Secretariat Team and expresses its appreciation to the Acting Secretariat Team for ensuring the effective continuity of the WLB’s work during the six-month period.

As the newly elected Secretariat Team begins its mandate, WLB reaffirms its commitment to the following political priorities adopted by the 12th Congress:

  • Ending military dictatorship and all forms of authoritarian rule;
  • Advancing women’s rights, gender equality, justice, and peace;
  • Ensuring the full, equal, and meaningful participation of women at all levels and across all sectors of political decision-making;
  • Advancing transitional justice;
  • Promoting the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda; and
  • Strengthening states and regions as a foundation for building a strong federal union, with the ultimate goal of realising a future federal democratic union.

The newly elected Secretariat will continue to strive, in collaboration with the WLB member organizations, partners, and allies towards a peaceful, just, and Federal Democratic Union of Burma.
