Women Rights Activists Across the World Call for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's Release

Women participants of the 49th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women and Beijing +10 Platform for Action Review, demand General Than Shwe, head of the Burmese military regime, immediately release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the courageous leader of the Burma democracy movement and 1991 Nobel Peace Laureate.

More than 800 NGO from every region of the world, who are working for women's human rights and Government Representatives are attending the session.  Fourteen women representatives from the Women's League of Burma (WLB) are among them.

The WLB has organized the attached signed petitions for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at the meetings and workshops during the UN session.  More than 500 participants from 87 countries signed the petition and support the call for her release.

The women participants protest the actions of the Burmese military regime in unlawfully arresting Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and for the other gross human rights violations perpetrated by the regime throughout the country including sexual violence against women.

The women at the session extended their support and solidarity to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for her tireless struggle for the freedom of the people of Burma.  They demand her immediate and unconditional release.
